e-learning How do you generate content for courses that can be used by any learning management system? How can you convert documents into interactive course materials? Here are two possible solutions.....

1. CourseGenie  http://www.coursegenie.com/info.htm

This is not an Open Source  project. However CourseGenie does provide a facility to generate content/course material offline, and to save the packages in a number of formats which are suitable for uploading to a wide range of  Course Management Systems....including the superb Open Source CMS Moodle .

Interactive course material is generated in MS Word. This is especially useful if users have documents already in Word format. Documents can then be tranformed into  a set of interactive web pages. Therefore, from one Word document it is possible to generate a set of web pages including navigation and interactive features....

  • navigation
  • table of contents
  • formatting
  • hyperlinks
  • popups
  • includes
  • definitions
  • selftest questions
  • Windows Media, flash, and QuickTime movies
  • streaming audio and video
  • IMS metadata

Coursegenie supports a variety of output formats, including
    • HTML and javascript pages
    • WebCT content module
    • Blackboard content module
    • Microsoft LRN IMS format
    • SCORM v1.2 package

      Demonstrations are available at

      2. The eXe Project            http://eduforge.org/projects/exe/

The main focus of  The eXe Project is developing an offline authoring environment that allows teachers to publish web content without the need to become proficient in HTML or XML markup. It is in early alpha development stages. The target is to to generate content that can be used by any Learning Management System.  Users will be able to select from a number of structured  teaching devices or to create their own teaching devices , such as like case studies, and a range of  interactive activities.
